Study United States geography using the five (5) themes.
  1. Location: Absolute (Latitude and Longitude)
                     Relative (cardinal direction).

  2. Place: Physical and human characteristics that make it unique.
  3. Region: Shared characteristics of an area.
  4. Movement: The people, goods, and ideas that are moving in and out of a place or region, and how they are transported.
  5. Human-Environment Interaction: How people and the environment affect each other.
Stations: These stations should be completed in order.
Lesson Description: Let's start the year by planning a cross country vacation! Welcome back to school, now lets plan a vacation! Use the 5 themes of geography to plan a trip around the United States. Your trip must go all the way across the country (from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific or the inverse). You will turn in a completed cross country vacation plan as evidence of your learning.
Station 1: Read/Understand
Use the reading materials and graphic organizers provided to learn about the states. (Text Pages A1 - 21)

Learning Goal: Learn about the geographic characteristics of at least 5 states in the United States, so that you can plan a cross country trip that you can take in the future!

Time: 1 hour
Station 2: Write/Make
Use your notes from the Reading/Understanding Station to design your cross country vacation.

Learning Goal: Apply what you learned about each State, by using the information to plan the sequence of your cross country vacation.
Include a Map!

Time: 1.5- hours
Station 3: Listen/Speak
Share, listen, and discuss your cross country vacation plans with others. Questioning + sharing ideas = Discussion.

Learning Goals: Participate in an academic discussion about the trip you have planned, and use your new knowledge to communicate.

Time: 15 - 30 minutes

EXIT TICKETS & Directions: Write your exit ticket in one paragraph using complete sentences and structured using one of these writing styles:
Description, Sequence, Cause/Effect, Compare/Contrast, Argumentative/Persuasive.
