Silent reading and quiet questioning, apply all the reading strategies that you have been taught. If you do not understand what you have read, stop, reread, and define words until you understand.

Do and submit quality work, consistently be on task, use evidence to support your claim, explain your reasoning, and follow all the directions.

Listen/Speak
During discussions, always use the language of history. If you are unsure how to do this, use the words on the word wall at the front of the classroom, the sentence starters provided, and/or your notes in your composition notebook.

Theme #1: American Ideals (2 - 3 weeks)
Questions: What ideals have shaped the American character and belief system?  
Have the American people achieved these ideals?
 

Purpose: To gain a deep understanding of the ideals that have shaped the United States of America, to evaluate how successful we are at achieving those ideals, and make suggestions for improving America's present and future.

Doing: You will analyze primary source texts, use Cornell style note taking to generate historical thinking questions and participate in class discussions, and collaborate with peers to find textual evidence to support your claims about relationships betweeen certain historic events and the development of the American character and belief system.

MISSION 1: Read/Understand
  • The Mayflower Compact
  • John Winthrops

  • The Declaration of Independence
  • The Constitution of the United States
  • Quotes from Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracy in America,"

  • Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Dream" speech.
Learning outcomes: 
1. Can analyze primary source texts.
2. Demonstrate strategies for reading above 8th grade level texts.
3. Can ask relevant questions to improve understanding.

4. Can clearly connect content and ideas.
5. Make claims about the content and ideas.

Time: 2 - 4 days
MISSION 2:
Write/Make
Ask questions in your notebook and answer questions to historical thinking questions in Actively Learn. Write for understanding and use academic and content vocabulary when writing claims, use textual evidence to support your claims, and provide citations for referenced texts.  

Learning outcomes:

1. Can use textual evidence in your writing to support your answers to historical thinking questions.
2. Can further understanding of texts by interacting with text through writing.
3. Can write using academic and content vocabulary.
4. Can write an appropriate citation.

Time: 2 - 4 days

MISSION 3:
Listen/Speak
Listen and speak to your peers and Ms. Detterich during collaboration and scholarly discussions. Use Habits of Mind.

Learning outcomes:

1. Can verbalize what you have learned or what you are learning, such as academic and content vocabulary, historical reading, writing, and thinking skills, and content knowledge

2. Can formulate questions for clarification, to further or deepen discussion, and of relevance to the topic or concepts at hand.

Time: 2 - 4 days
